Our kids need as healthy a start as we can possibly give them. That is why we have a policy of no poisons. When 20 to 40 people are working around the same garden plots it is also hard to keep track of who used what chemical when, or how much would accumulate.Using poisons in a school garden also begs the question of who is going to take liability if a child takes a reaction to residues.
So no poisons. We don't use artificial fertilizers as they are a false economy. They make for lazy land use and are not organically sustainable. The education we are devising for our students is a high quality one. Safe organic compost and fertilizers are our method. Both of these things are written up as policy in our School Environmental Management Plan. [S.E.M.P.]
A basic garden unit/workbook incorporating many useful theories or concepts for successful gardening. If you use this you may not need any of the links below
Take a walk around the garden while assembling your own jewellery in a targeted colour. All you need is duct tape. Cut the tape so it fits comfortably around your wrist and tape it around like a bracelet, sticky side out. Take a walk and look for small leaves, flowers and other natural artifacts to adorn your wristlets.
Work Skills-Job training in the garden. Thinking about getting you students trained to complete tasks independently, this is a good place to start. As you train each job take photos to make a visual schedule relevant to your class.
